Weirdness in dogs...

Alright. My friend has a golden retriever. She takes him for walks on the golf course near her home. Her dog likes to "roll" in the "goose-poop" on the course. Can someone please explain that to me?

And while you're at it, where is my cat Sambo hiding all of my socks?

I read once (I think) that dogs roll in "stuff" because they're trying to make themselves smell like the would-be "prey" so as to better sneak up on the "prey." Blending in? Some sort of vestige from the less "civilized" canine past. Heh. I think my dog just likes to roll in anything icky, whether it's a dead carcass of something, or the something's poop. Ugh.

Dogs like to smell, uhm, earthy. We have to keep ours in after a bath or else they go roll in poop.

Yes, retrievers by nature are hunting dogs. Specifically, they are bird dogs, and so will do whatever it takes to mask their real smell.

Rolling in goose doo (or like my dog, deer doo) is one of those tricks.

What's good for the goose is not good when it comes to humans.....

One of the few things I like about life on the East Coast (as opposed to Berkeley) is that I don't have to worry my dog Puff rolling in "homeless poop." Trust me on this; many dogs will do the same thing with the human stuff that they do with the goose stuff. (It's no fun to clean up, either.)

I LOVE THIS BLOG!!!
